Okay, remember last week’s post?
Now, here’s some statistics for everyone to ruminate over. All are pulled from the 2013 FBI crime report unless otherwise noted. It should be noted that the information from that source presented here is only valid for those agencies which send their data to the FBI for aggregation. While this covers the vast majority of the country, it is very much incomplete. Please read until the end before you freak out at me.
Percentage of federal law enforcement officers who are white: 85.6%
Percentage of federal law enforcement officers who are black: 10.4% (Justice Department, 2008)
Percentage of state and local law enforcement officers who are white: 85%
Percentage of state and local law enforcement officers who are black: 11.9% (Justice Department, 2007)
USA Today claims that an analysis of FBI crime reports from 2006-2012 shows an average of 96 incidents of white cops fatally shooting black people per year. In that time, the average of incidents wherein cops fatally shot people came out to 397 incidents per year. Therefore, it is probable that around 115 of 2013’s incidents involved white cops killing black people. (I couldn’t find data on this, so I did some hunting and number crunching. If you wish to dispute this number, please do.)
